Romeo and Julie

Callum Scott Howells was excellent as Romeo

Seen as part of Y13 Drama A-Level, I thought Romeo and Julie was an excellent take on Shakespeare.

The acting was exceptional, and the storytelling was good, although I didn't feel any particular connection with Julie, or feel invested in her story. I felt far more attached to Romeo, and cared far more about what happened to him, going against the grain of the play.

Catrin Aaron was standout as Romeo's alcoholic mother.

I also didn't quite feel the staging worked - the four performers often felt a little lost in the sheer scale of the Dorfman Theatre's stage, and I feel the production would have been better suited to a smaller space. As well as this, the squiggly lights above didn't seem to have any particular meaning, just being there to provide interest during the transitions - I would have liked it if there was a clearer reason for having them.

Overall though, a good piece!
